The group was established in 1978 by Garry Brown-Neaves who started out as a bricklayer. Over the years, it acquired numerous businesses including in 1987 the acquisition of Dale Alcock Homes Pty Ltd which brought in Dale Alcock whom also started as a brick layer into the business.〔http://www.abngroup.com.au/news/Webb-and-Brown-Neaves-Celebrates-30-Years/〕 Since its establishment ABN companies have risen to national prominence and are now readily accepted as being Australians leading building company. Having won more HIA construction awards than any other project builder, ABN homes are known for their superior standard of materials, latest construction methods and unprecedented build speeds.
Initially building only a few homes per year the group is now responsible for building more than 3,500 new homes annually, making it the largest and most successful builder in Australia. Many have credited the groups success down to the mantra that clients and staff take priority over profit, and this in turn has seen the company subsequently be successful through repeat business and the retention of staff. Since 2011 the company has participated in a nationwide survey of staff satisfaction and has come out consistently as the number one private business to work in Australia. Further to this ethos of retaining skilled staff Dales has undertaken its own apprentice scheme, hiring over 300 apprentices across its different businesses, which enhances its reputation for quality and insulates itself against future labour and trade shortages.
